  • Resumen del Proyecto

    The program “Biomolecules of Medicinal and Industrial Interest” (Biomolecules), will in the first 5 years, be conducted through a Ph.D. training program based on the “sandwich” model, to promote and strengthen research aimed at the discovery of Anticancer and Antiparasitic Biomolecules. Chemical studies of natural products and derivatives with biological activities will be done in collaboration with LU-CAS and UMSA-(IIFB-IIQ), while anticancer studies will be performed in collaboration with LU-CPG and UMSA-IBMB. The current proposal includes a new collaboration between three UMSA departments and aims at developing established capacities in Bolivia. All plant extracts will be interchanged among the centers for preliminary biological evaluations and pure molecules isolated or synthesized will be focus for anticancer studies.

    Results of our scientific findings, based on traditional knowledge, will be returned to the communities, when adequate, for a better local use of the medicinal species in the treatment of parasitic infections and cancer.     • Objetivos

  • Objetivo General

    • To increase the ideal personal highly qualified, at IIFB-UMSA,in order to generate knowledge for a better understanding of the Tacana useful plants potential (health,antiparasitic)through chemical and biological research on local traditional medicines.

    • To optimize the use of human and financial resources for research at IIFB, IIQ and IBMB, training scientists working in multidisciplinary projects, establishing mechanisms to use the big equipment and articulating the existing M.Sc. programs where participate IIFB, IIQ and IBMB and implementing a multidisciplinary PhD program at UMSA in the area

    • To increase the effective use of research results, returning the results of medicinal plants to the communities for a better local use and transferring some results to Bolivian Pharmaceutical Industry to develop novel products with commercial potential.

  • Objetivos Especificos

    • To initiate the studies of the first 5 useful plants, from a larger list of selected species that will be studied in the program Biomolecules

    • To have up to 3 students included in the MSc at the Biological and Biomedical Sciences to initiate studies on plants from the Tacana Pharmacopoeia

    • To continue to harvest selected plants according to the input of the Tacana communities
